A Note of Gratitude

I met a guy yesterday who told me he had cut himself in the exact same place on his left hand doing the exact same thing as I had last Thanksgiving, only instead of cutting an avocado he was trying to slice open a coconut. Same severed sensory nerve. Same numbness and lack of feeling in his left index finger.

He said none of his doctors had ever told him about the restorative surgery I received. He didn’t know it was possible to go back into the wound, clear the scar tissue, and pipe the withdrawn nerves into a tiny conduit so they could grow back together. He still has no feeling in his finger, and said I was lucky to have been told about the procedure while nerves were fresh enough to reunite.

I felt so lucky after that interaction. It’s not the first time my family has been blessed with expert medical care by being in the right place and at the right time.

Having most of my feeling back in the one finger we as human beings use for almost everything we do makes a world of difference, and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to express how thankful I am that that feeling, in my case, has been mostly restored.
