NATO Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP)

NATOs tripwire against Russian aggression. The Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) is one of NATOs most direct deterrence measures against Russian military threats in Eastern Europe. Established in 2017, it consists of multinational NATO battlegroups in Poland and the Baltic states, with forces rotating from the U.S., UK, Germany, and other allies. Though relatively small, these units send a clear message: any attack on one will be met by many. As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reshapes European security, eFP has evolved from a symbolic presence to a key frontline deterrent.

History

  • Warsaw Summit Decision (2016): NATO leaders agreed to deploy four multinational battlegroups in response to growing security concerns along the eastern flank.
  • Deployment of Battlegroups (2017): The eFP battlegroups, led by framework nations (UK, Canada, Germany, and the US), were stationed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.
  • Expanded Presence (2022–Present): Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO reinforced its eastern defenses, increasing troop numbers and capabilities while establishing additional forces on standby for rapid deployment.
